1. MICHAEL1 HARNESS was born Bet. 1699 - 1700 in Unknown, and died Abt. March 1785 in Hardy County Va now WV. He married ELIZABETH ? Abt. 1721 in Unknown. She was born Abt. 1700 in Unknown, and died Aft. 1785 in Hardy County Va now WV.
Notes for MICHAEL HARNESS:
In my research of the Harness family I have found no conclusive proof of the origin or ancestors of Michael Harness. Some researchers believe he is the son of Jacob Harness and the grandson of William Harness who came to Maryland before 1663. Michael and his wife named their first son Jacob. It is possible that he was named for his Grandfather which was a custom at that time. Michael was named administrator of the will of Jacob Harness dated February 14, 1759. This is not the Jacob thought to be his father as he died in 1704 and not his son Jacob as he died much later, about 1836. It is possible that this Jacob was a brother to Michael.
Other researchers believe he came from Germany to New York with his father about 1710. His name is listed as Johann Michael Ernst Hoerner and his father as Ludwig Ernest Hoerner, whose name was listed on the Governor Hunter Ration List in 1710 as head of a family of 5 persons, 4 over and 1 under the age of 10. Michael moved to Berks County, Pennsylvania sometime between 1723 and 1725.
In addition there are questions about Michael's wife. According to his will dated 1779 and filed in court March 8 1785 his wife's name was Elizabeth, A Frederick County West Virginia marriage record dated some time in the 1760's, not sure of the exact year as the last number is unreadable, lists the marriage of Michael Harness and Elizabeth Westfall. Who was this Michael Harness? Michael Harness had a son Michael Jr. who was married to Catherine Westfall and after he was killed by Indians in 1763 his widow Catherine married Abraham Kuykendall. So who was the Michael Harness that married Elizabeth Westfall in 1760 something? Was this Michael Sr. If it is then this was a second marriage for him, and the Elizabeth listed in his will would not be the mother of his children. All of this leaves unanswered questions which may never be resolved. Most of the documents used to arrive at these conclusions originated some time after 1738-39 when Michael and his family settled in Hardy County, and also quite some time after Michael's death in 1785. The Helen Black letters, one in Oct 1882 and the other May 1883 were written 95 plus year after Michael's death. The George Yocum interview was about 58 years after Michael's death. I find it difficult to consider these as absolute fact and will continue to list parts of this as unknown.
The Harness family, the Yoakum family and the Stump family were among the first to settle in the South Branch Valley. Records indicate this was about 1738. Michael built Fort Harness on the South Branch in 1738-39. The fort was located 3 1/2 miles southwest of what is now Moorefield West Virginia. There is evidence that Michael leased the land for a small fee from Lord Halifax and by a lease and release arrangement became the owner. Lord Halifax is said to have owned approximately six million acres in Hampshire and Hardy Counties Virginia, now West Virginia and in 1748 commissioned George Washington to survey and lay out parcels of land. George Washington's writings of his survey made mention of the forts along the South Branch including Fort Harness.

This last portion in brackets was missing from the original copy, but
taken from the Will Book. The entire will was copied into Hampshire
County, Virginia, Will Book 2 (1780-1794), pages 111-113, [the index
reference is to page 112] from the original which was presented as shown
above, and ordered to be recorded. The copyist altered spelling and
changed capitalization in many, many places, but did not alter the names
or meaning at any point. The original will has, written on the verso of

There is another so-called "Will Book" copy of this will in a book of
Hampshire County miscellaneous wills [but with no appraisals or sales],
1756 through 1860, but only for deceased with surnames A-J. This is all
typed! It is labeled Hampshire County Wills, Vol. 1, but it is not the
volume 1 there should have been. On page 15 of that book, Michael
HarnessÆs will was entered, but without some sections [eg., slaves], and
with name spellings ôcorrected[read, confused]ö and word order changed.
Notes for ELIZABETH ?:
It is reported that Elizabeth once killed an Indian with an axe, as he came thru her door, while the men were out on patrol.
Children of MICHAEL HARNESS and ELIZABETH ? are:
i. JACOB2 HARNESS, b. Abt. 1722, PA.
Notes for JACOB HARNESS:
It is believed that Jacob died as an infant or at a very young age.
ii. JOHN HARNESS, b. Abt. 1725, PA; d. April 28, 1810, Hardy County Va now WV; m. EUNICE PETTY PETTICE, Abt. 1757, VA now WV; b. February 20, 1735/36, Isle of Jersey; d. June 16, 1823, Hardy County Va now WV.

Notes for ELIZABETH HARNESS:
Elizabeth was 11 years old when the family moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia, now West Virginia. She helped clear the path for the wagons across the mountains to the Valley of the South Branch of the Potomac. She went ahead of the wagons to help clear the way and was the first white woman to set foot in the Valley.
iv. ADAM HARNESS, b. Abt. 1728, PA; d. February 14, 1759, Hardy County Va now WV; m. UNKNOWN.
Notes for ADAM HARNESS:
In some genealogy files Sarah Kuykendall is listed as the wife of Adam Harness. There are two Sarah's in my records of the Kuykendall family, the first born in 1742 and another about 1765. If the family history is correct Adam was killed by Indians in 1759 so niether of the Sarah's would have been old enough to have been the mother of Adam's children. Adam's son, also named Adam, was most likely the Adam Harness married to Sarah Kuykendall.

Notes for MICHAEL HARNESS:
Records indicate that Michael was killed by Indians near Fort Harness Aug 20 1763Indian Raids In Colonial Hampshire County:
Pontiac's War
by Terry Gruber
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the beginning of a series of postings concerning Indian raids in colonial Hampshire County during Pontiac's War of 1763-64. After the French surrendered to the British in 1763, a series of strong, semi-coordinated attacks broke out on the Ohio frontier at the instigation of the Ottawa chief, Pontiac. By the summer, all of the former French forts had been captured except Detroit and Duquesne, renamed Pitt. At this time, the Indian fury began to tear into the heart of Hampshire County. The raids lost their steam in August 1764 after Colonel Henry Bouquet's resounding defeat of a large party he encountered on his way to relieve Fort Pitt. The battle site is at Bushy Run State Park, near Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Newsworthy activities always found there way into the newspapers of the day, in spite of the fact that there were no reporters. Indian raids occurring in Virginia were frequently reported in the Pennsylvania Gazette. It is from this paper, that the following reports are gleaned. The report is from the October 16, 1763 edition.
WILLIAMSBURGH, September 16.
An express arrived in town yesterday, with letters to his Honour the Governor from Col. Stephen, by which we have the following advices, viz. That a Party of Indians attacked 6 men in Weltonmeadow, on Loonycreek, the 20th of August, about XI at night; when they killed Michael Harness and Jonathan Welton, wounded Joab Welton, and took one Delea Prisoner. The Indian that wounded Joab Welton was upon the point of repeating the stroke with the tomahawk, and killing him, when the savage was shot by one Delea, brother to the prisoner of that name; on his discharging his piece, he was attacked by several Indians at once; the first that made up to him he knocked down with his gun, but the savages wresting it out of his hand, he knocked down another with a tomahawk, which he carried under his belt. By this time the Indians had jostled him to the place where his brother lay tied; upon seeing him taken prisoner, he immediately dropt all thoughts of further resistance, and gave himself up, expecting likewise to be taken prisoner; but they hurried him away to the Indian that was shot, tomahawked him, scalped him, and wounded him with a knife, leaving him for dead, but the poor man crawled to some hay, and covered himself up, where he was found next morning perfectly in his senses, told the whole affair circumstantially, and lived two days afterwards. On receiving this intelligence, Col. Stephen ordered Major Wilson and Captain Collins of the Hampshire militia to raise two companies of voluntiers, and pursue the enemy, as soon as they could possibly provide themselves with Provisions. Major Wilson took the rout of Loonycreek; and Capt. Collins being ordered to reconnoiter the head branches of Pattersoncreek, he fell in with the Majorparty at the foot of the Allegheny mountains. After communicating intelligence, they thought it advisable to pursue the Indians over the mountains; accordingly, on the 30th of August, after a pursuit of 120 miles, over as rugged mountains as can be found, they came up with them on a branch of the Monongahela. Being on fresh tracks in the evening, Major Wilson was certain that their encampment was at no great distance; he therefore detached parties different ways in the night, to listen for horse bells, or see if they could discover fire: the noise of the bells directed them to the encampment, and before day they had crept within 30 paces of the enemy, and surrounded them. The orders were not to fire until it was light enough to see all the births where the Indians lay; but a big fellow rising to make up the fire, one of the party fired at him a little too soon, which brought on the engagement. This is to be attributed to the young man's eagerness to revenge the death of his father, who had been killed and scalped by the savages. Major Wilson, however, routed the party, took 3 Indian scalps, wounded many more, and took 11 rifles and 2 smooth barrel guns from them, with all their war equipage, and retook a number of horses. They likewise released Delea the prisoner, and got back the three scalps taken in Weltonmeadow.

Notes for CATHERINE WESTFALL:
After the death of Michael Harness Catherine married Abraham Kuykendall. Abraham had previously been married to Fanny Claypoole. In Abraham's will, dated Feb. 20 1777, he mention's his stepson Jeremiah Claypoole, who was the child of his first wife, Fanny Claypoole from a previous marriage. Also in Abraham's will he mentions a stepson Isaac Harness and stepdaughter Sarah Harness as being the children of his wife Catherine.
A court document filed July 22 1781 Catherine Kuykendall widow of Abraham Kuykendall to sell land he purchased from John Decker to settle his estate.

Harness tradition is that Conrad was killed and scalped by Indians. Some stories are that the Indians took his wife Mary and other stories are that she was also killed. Their daughter, then a small child, was also killed and her remains were later found an unidentified by a necklace she wore.
It is also reported that Rebecca Harness, about three years of age, the daughter of Leonard and Catherine Heath Harness was visiting Conrad's family at the time, and was also killed by the Indians.

Notes for PETER HARNESS:
The information for the Peter Harness and Susannah Vause Family is from A GLIMPSE AT THE PAST THE HARNESS FAMILY HISTORY a book by Harold Harness and research that I have done on the family.
Peter Harness went from Hardy County WV to Fayette County, Jefferson Township, Ohio in 1810 or 1811. He purchased the western half of Duff's Survey in 1811 and divided it among his sons. It is believed this was about 1000 acres. Jefferson Township organized school districts March 18 1826 and records show the 3rd district encompassed the Harness land and showed the owners as Peter Harness, Jacob Harness, Adam Harness, and Arthur Harness. The Peter Harness named would be Peter Jr. as Peter Sr. died in February 1825. John Harness was not mentioned as he died in 1818 and son Michael also not mentioned as he was accused of murdering his brother john and had jumped bail and went to Lewis County VA. George also a son not mentioned and it is believed he had left OH and went to Carroll County Indiana prior to this time.
From court records of Fayette County dated April 1838. Fredrick Harness vs. Joseph Geller. Fredrick Harness, Gideon Harness, William Crenson and Elizabeth (Harness) Crenson his wife have land devised to them by Peter Harness, late of this County. decd. This land in Duff's survey # 1271.
This would probably have been their father John's share of the land Peter purchased in 1811.
Notes for Susannah Vause:
Some records have the name Susannah and others have the name Susan.
Peter and his wife named a daughter Susannah and a granddaughter was also named Susannah. The name Susan does not appear in subsequent generations.

Susannah Conner first married Hopkins Rose May 22nd 1812 in Fayette County PA. Records show he died in October 9th 1823 in Fayette County Ohio. Tax records from Fayette County Ohio in 1826 show Susannah Rose in Jefferson Township, 3rd School District the same area the Harness Family lived.
In early 1851 Susannah applied for bounty land in Darke County Ohio, which she as the widow of Hopkins Rose, who served in the war of 1812, would have been entitled to under the act of 1850. She stated she had been married to Hopkins Rose, who died October 9th 1823, and that she was 56 years old at the time of the filing. The filing signed by an X and was witnessed by C.W. Witt and Elijah Shook. Another affidavit of support was filed by Adam Harness and James Conner. The claim for the bounty land was rejected because she did not state that she was married to Adam Harness at the time she filed the application for the bounty land in Darke County Ohio.
Records show there were at least 2 children from the marriage to Hopkins Rose but no record of children from the marriage to Adam Harness. Susannah may have had several illegitimate children before her marriage to Adam Harness which was 9 years after the death of her first husband.

Elcy Mahalia Dawson was an aunt to Phoebe Dawson who married John Harness brother of James
There is a note in the Harness Family records that Elcy Mahalia Dawson was the first white girl born in La Porte Indiana. Not sure if that meant La Porte County or the town of La Porte. All my research on the Dawson family disproves this as Matthias Dawson, Elcy's father was in Fayette County in both the 1820 and 1830 census, and Elcy was born in 1823. I suppose it is possible that Matthias and family moved to La Porte County and back to Fayette County between 1820 and 1830 but I feel that is improbable. However the Matthias Dawson family were in LaPorte County as early as 1831 and are listed in the 1840 La Porte County census
In 1963 the town of LaCrosse, LaPorte County Indiana had a centennial marking the hundredth year since it's founding in 1863. In their centennial book there is an article about the early history of the town of LaCrosse and of La Porte County. According to this article the first settlement in La Porte County was March 15 1829 by Mrs. Mirian Benidict and her six sons and one daughter Sarah who was married to Henley Clyburn. Elizabeth Mirian Clyburn born July 16 1829 daughter of Henly and Sarah Clyburn, was the first white child born in LaPorte County. This further adds to my belief that the Harness family records were not accurate.

She was born January 25, 1792 in Hardy County Va now WV, and died June 25, 1861 in Wappelo County IA.
Notes for JOHN HARNESS: The 1809 and 1810 Ohio tax list shows John Harness in Ross County Ohio. He is also listed in the 1820 Ross County census.
Although I find no record of a previous marriage, if the date of birth for Elinder Troutwine is correct she could not be the mother of all the children. I believe only Fredrick, Gideon and Elizabeth are children of John and Elinder and the others were from a previous marriage.
Children of JOHN HARNESS and UNKNOWN are:

-- Adam Harness, one of the pioneers of
Henry County, was born in Hardiville, Virginia, on the 8th of March, 1808.
He was the ninth in a family of three girls and seven boys, children of Adam
and Elizabeth (Baker) Harness. In 1836 Adam Harness, Jr., was married in St.
Charles County, Missouri, to Miss Nancy Murdock. Before he had attained his
majority he came to Missouri on business for his father, and subsequently
engaged in teaching school, and taught in St. Charles and Gasconade
Counties. He afterwards located in Jefferson County, where he lived for some
time, then moving to St. Louis County, where he remained until the year of
1854, when he came to Western Missouri, settling on the place which he now
occupies. He at first bought a preemption claim and then entered his farm,
entering and purchasing about 1,000 acres. He commenced growing stock, which
he has since continued. Mr. Harness' neighbors when he settled here, were
Dr. Gates, Judge Stewart, Stephen and Henry Vickars, and a Mr. Sevier. He
has reared a family of nine children, of whom five are living: William,
Joseph, Alexander, Mary Ann and Nancy. Jack, Elvira, Adam and an infant, are
deceased.

--- Joseph H. Harness. Along a stretch of
well-kept highway in the Southeastern part of Walker township are a number
of very attractive farm homes. The surroundings are ideal for a progressive
farming community, with a flowing stream and beautiful timber tracts in the
vicinity. This corner of the township is undoubtedly one of the most fertile
and progressive in Henry County. The home of Joseph H. Harness and wife is
one of the pretty places of the county, and shows in its appearance that the
dwellers therein have a taste for the better things of life and believe in
beautifying their surroundings. The Harness residence is a very pretty
cottage, standing on a rise of ground on the west side of the highway and
the other buildings and fencing are in keeping with the house. The Harness
farm consists of 210 acres of well-improved farm lands, eighty acres of
which are in the home place. J. H. Harness was born October 6, 1871, on the
Harness homestead within one-half mile of his present home. He is the son of
William Harness (born April 30, 1844; died July 3, 1914), a native of West
Virginia and a son of Adam Harness, who was one of the first pioneers to
make a settlement in what is now Walker township. Mr. Harness preempted or
entered Government land at a time when there was but one house between his
cabin and the old settlement of Germantown in the early forties. There were
no homes on the way to Clinton which was then but a frontier settlement;
William Harness enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1863 and served for one
year with the Confederate forces during the Civil War. He became very ill
with measles and it was necessary for his father to make the long journey to
St. Louis and bring him home in order that he might receive proper care.
Adam Harness made the long trip to St. Louis and returned by ox-team, the
only available method of transportation in those days. William Harness
received a tract of land from his father and married Mary Ann Mullen, who
was born in Henry County, a daughter of William Mullen, a pioneer from
Kentucky who gave the land for what is now known as the Mullen Cemetery.
Mary Ann Harness was born in 1848 and died November 15, 1896. To William and
Mary Ann Harness were born fourteen children, twelve of whom were reared to
maturity: William A., a farmer in Bear Creek township; A. L., Kansas City,
Missouri; Mrs. Mary Hackney, Urich, Missouri; Mrs. Martha Long, White Oak
township; Sterling V. and Mrs. Stella McCoy, twins, the former of whom
resides in Bates County, Missouri, and the latter is deceased; Harvey, White
Oak township; John S., deceased; Edgar died at the age of nineteen years;
Mrs. Sarah Wort, living in Kansas; Mrs. Frances Jennings, Maxville, Kansas.
J. H. Harness was educated in the common schools and has spent his whole
life in the vicinity of his birthplace with the exception of one and a half
years' residence in Eldorado Springs, Missouri. Mr. Harness was married,
October 18, 1893, to Miss Gertrude Colson, who was born in Walker township,
the daughter of Archibald and Hannah (Sevier) Colson, the former of whom
came to Henry County and made a settlement in the early fifties, dying here
in 1906. He was a Union veteran, one of the best-known of the old settlers
of Henry County, and reared a splendid family. His widow now resides in
Urich. She is a direct descendant of the famous Sevier family of Tennessee,
One of the members of which family was Governor Sevier of Tennessee. She was
born in Osage County, Missouri, in September, 1846 and is the mother of
seven children: Dr. J. R. Colson, Schell City, Missouri; Mattie, wife of
Richard Angle, Clinton, Missouri; Mrs. Laura Chrisman, Bonham, Texas; Mrs.
Mollie Clyzer, a widow living at Montrose; Mrs. Gertrude Harness; B. S.
Colson, Appleton City, Mo; R. P. a live stock buyer, Montrose, Missouri. To
J. H. and Gertrude Harness have been born two children: Glen W.; and Richard
P. C., both of whom are at home with their parents. Politically, Mr. Harness
is a Democrat. He and
