John Howard, son of Henry & Hannah (Sharples) Howard, was born 2/3/1725 and died 10/12/1793, probably Edgmont Twp. At Middletown Friends Mtg. on 2/22/1747 he married Elizabeth Perry, daughter of *Christopher PERRY. She was buried 4/1/1790 at Middletown Friends Mtg. as was her husband. John Howard was a farmer and was taxed on 60 acres of land in Edgmont in 1764 and with 30 acres there at the time of his death. Note: PERRY researchers, believe Elizabeth PERRY to be the daughter of *Charles PERRY.

There is something about the WOOD - WISE surname connection that I can't shake, the first time I found these names on the web, I felt sure my Father had mentioned these names.. Later to receive the photo of Effie CHANCE WISE (dau of Benjamin III) from my cousin, confirmed a connection to the Wise surname... Suspect Effie CHANCE was adopted by family members after her fathers death, she later married a WISE. The only Effie WISE found is married to Joshua WISE. Suspect Joshua CHANCE and Effie WOOD's daughter Margaret CHANCE married a John LONG and adopted Effie CHANCE LONG WISE.

He died in Alliance, Stark County, Ohio, 13 July 1858, aged 67 years, 4 months, 23 days, and was buried in Alliance Cemetery. Perry lived near his father in Short Creek, Harrison County, Ohio. Perry CHANCE married Lavina RUBEL in Smithfield, Jefferson County, Ohio, on April 16, 1811. Lavina, daughter of Jesse and Sarah RUBEL , was born in Virginia. She died on November 8, 1873, age 83 years, 6 months, 8 days, and was buried in Alliance City Cemetery. Her son, Peter Chance, Esq., was executor of her estate."

JOHN CHANCE one of the oldest settlers of this town, died of quick consumption. March 10, 1896, at the age of seventy-one years and fourteen days at his residence on North Main Street, where he has lived for the past thirty-five years. Mr. CHANCE was born in Clay Co., Indiana, Feb. 25, 1825, emigrated to Illinois in 1841, where he lived intil 1845. He then removed to Wisconsin where he was married to Miss R(ebecca) J(ane) BOWMAN on the 3rd day of Oct. 1847, and there they lived until 1855, then they moved west to Red Wing. After living there a year, they removed to Pine Island. Where they have since lived until the time of his death. Coming here in the spring of 1856, he preempted the land near his present estate. he also laid out and platted the north part of the town site of Pine Island, which he preserved until this day. He was the first one to put in a stock of goods in Pine Island and was also the first postmaster. Place of rest Pine Island Cemetery. from Dawn Chance Ward

PIONEER WOMAN AT REST.
MRS. REBECCA JANE CHANCE, one of the early pioneer residents of the village, died at her home in the village at 5 o'clock Saturday evening March 21, 1908 of dropsy. Rebecca BOWMAN was born in Indiana Nov. 5, 1829 and when a mere child moved with her parents to Illinois, where on Oct 3, 1847 she was united in marriage to John CHANCE and moved with him to Lodi, WIS., and shortly afterward to Red Wing where Mr. CHANCE engaged in the merchantile business. In 1856 they came to Pine Island, then a fronteer settlement and here Mr. CHANCE engaged in the merchantile and hotel business which he followed for many years. He also owned part of the townsite lying on the northside of the river, the original plat of which is still in possession of the family . Deceased was the mother of six children, only two of whom are still living; Daniel L. CHANCE of Oberon, ND and Mrs. Nancy WECKERLING, of Roscoe. She is also survived by one sister Mrs. Libbie SACKETT of Madelia, and several grandchildren, with one of whom, Ray McKENZIE, she has made her home for several years past. Laid to rest Pine Island Cemetery. Attended the funeral Mrs. WECKERLING of Roscoe, Mrs. Libbie SACKETT of Madelia and her son Bert SACKETT of Janesville, Chas OSTROM of Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. G. GUNDERSON and Mr. and Mrs. Fred WECKERLING of Zumbrota.
