William, William.. to Benjamin
As a young child I was interested in where the surname Chance came from?? The only other kids in school named Chance, shared the same address as well as parents... So I asked my father, ( as I took notes) he went into great detail. The name Chance, was a variation of Chauncey / Chancey from England. Our direct line had used the name Chance since coming to America. Some of the family had changed it to various other spellings.. My father went into detail about each line, much information was given on the females of the line. How they connected... Now this may sound quite simple, but it was very hard for me to follow how everyone connected.. At one point I simply asked for the men's names .. Quite simply he said.. " I am the son of Benjamin, who was the son of Benjamin, who was the son of Perry, who was the son of Benjamin, who was the son of Benjamin, who was the son of ..(pause).. Daniel, I started to write the name down, but my Dad stopped me, saying 'don't write that down'. - as I had initially followed this story, I expected Samuel, to be defined.. as the name Samuel was mentioned several times. However the names Daniel nor Samuel were in the male tail line of names I had written .. As my attention refocused to the conversation,.. Daniel Boone (Chance) was now Daniel Boone - I suddenly realized Daddy was talking about "the Daniel Boone" .. I was rather confused at that point, so I repeated the male line of names over and over in my mind. A few years later when I came across the notes I had taken, I looked them over and was disgusted that Daniel was mentioned, but was not written down and I threw away my notes. So now I start from scratch,.. There was no Daniel Boone (Chance), was someone in this era was related to "Daniel Boone" - or traveled with Daniel Boone?! There are something's that still come to mind, different names and named that (should) pertain to that line!?... as I find bits and pieces of the puzzle - some names come back to me, although I am not sure how they fit - I kick myself for throwing away those notes, they had so many answers, to my now questions...
Now, many, many years later, I found on the internet, reference to the CHANCE's from Queen Anne's County, Maryland......
There were things that come back to me, in bits & pieces...
Names include Aaron Chance, Adney, Bachelor, Barnes, Howard, Sharples(s), Rabb, Smith, Talbot(t) Failing<sic>, Kline/Klein, Sells, Noel, Sohns, Tucker, Werner, Sims, Dunn, Alexander, Schuster, Kidd, Kidwell, Overman, Hines/Haines, Gotshall/Gottchell, Steel, Ledbetter, Brewster, Lyman .. Oldfield, Wolf, Norman, Ellis
I can account for some of these names now, but not all..
At one point my father started to stray into a different branch of Chance's.. One of which were the Clay County, Indiana Chance's.
Would like to find the parents of Laura Chance who married George Slaughterback on Sept. 1, 1884 in Putnam, Ohio, I think there is a missing link. Shortly after my father explained who we were descended from, he took my brother and me, to meet his cousin, Clara Sims Slaughterback Wunderlich, if I am not mistaken my Father mentioned a Chance/Slaughterback connection.. Have found a Laura Chance & George Slaughterback, what is the connection.. ??
2005 - I have found there was a Daniel Chancey who was married to an Anne Overman - yes that seems to have pertained to something -- but what?? As I think back, the women's lines were discussed in detail - does this line link to Sims/Green lineage? sooo many questions...
EFFIE CHANCE WISE / EFFIE LONG WISE
We have a photo of Effie Chance Wise - sister of Perry Chance, I remember the name Wise and some how link it to Wood/Woods. Oddly enough I have found an Effie Long Wise.
Effie Chance Wise may have been born in Harrison or Coshocton County, Ohio, depending on her date of birth. The CHANCE family was located in Harrison Co., Ohio in 1827 when Perry Chance was born, by 1830 the CHANCE family is found in Coshocton Co., Ohio.
From Effie Chance Wise's photo she lived to be fairly old, there is one Effie Wise found in the 1880 census. According to family records Effie Wise found in the 1880 census is Effie Long Wise, her mother is listed with the maiden surname of Chance.
Effie Long Wise was born 1837 in Coshocton Co., Ohio.
Have tracked Perry Chance was living in the exact same area as Effie Long Wise when Perry's son, Benjamin Franklin Chance (my great grandfather) was born in 1856 Pike County, Indiana.
Keep going in circles trying to find Effie Chance Wise - each time I find myself back to Effie Long Wise..
Question: Was Effie Chance Wise adopted by family?? After Perry and Effie's father Benjamin died?
Note: Many thanks to my cousins Pammysue & Sandy for information and photos. Most of all my Daddy, without his stories, I would have no clues to help solve these many mysteries.
